Thomas held his hand up. “I’ll get it.”
I knew he just wanted to avoid the woods.
Liam tossed him the keys. “Take the car.”
“Remember we don’t know where the werewolf went,” I said.
“I’m fast. He won’t catch me.” Thomas ran down the driveway toward the road.
Liam and I raced into the wooded area.
“Perhaps I should clear out a path to the neighbor’s house,” I said.
“As many trips as you’ve made recently, that might be a good idea,” Liam said.
I remained on high alert as we rushed across toward the manor. The werewolf hadn’t shown up, but that didn’t mean he wouldn’t make an appearance at any moment. Liam and I burst onto the manor’s lawn. We ran toward the porch.
“Want to try a spell to get in?” Liam asked.
“I’m saving my energy in case I need a big spell to get rid of this guy. What if he gets the book?” I asked.
“Then we’ll get it back from him.” Liam winked.
It was a nice thing to say, but I knew it might not be that easy. I knew how hard I worked to keep the book. Any other leader would do the same.
“I hope Thomas gets here soon,” I said. “What’s taking so long?”
The roar of the engine caught our attention. Thomas sped down the driveway. He stopped in front of the manor and jumped out.
“I’m coming,” he said, waving the keys.
I grabbed the keys from his outstretched hand.
My hand shook as I opened the door. I had no idea what I would find. We raced into the foyer. There was no sign of the man and everything was quiet. That didn’t last long though. A loud bang came from upstairs.
“What was that?” Thomas asked.
“We’re about to find out,” I said.
We ran up the stairs. My legs had never moved so quickly. When I turned the corner at the second floor landing I ran down the hallway toward my bedroom. When I got closer to the bedroom door I saw that he had knocked the door down.
“He got into the bedroom,” I said.
Once in the room he had managed to get the closet door off too. Now he was trying to drag the safe from the closet. Luckily for me I knew he wouldn’t have the strength for that feat.
“What do you think you doing?” I yelled.
He froze, staring at me with wide eyes.
“Why do you want the book? What makes you think you can have it?”
“I want to be the leader,” he said in his heavy French accent.
“No can do, buddy,” Thomas said with a wave of his finger.
Jean-Claude closed his eyes and held his hands up toward the ceiling.
“Oh, no. What do you think you’re doing? You can’t cast a spell against us. It’s three against one, buddy,” I said, holding up three fingers.
I motioned for Liam and Thomas to hold my hands. Momentarily I was at a loss for words on which spell to use against Jean-Claude.
“Banish all evil from the manor. Get him out of here right now.”
We chanted over and over. Jean-Claude fell to the floor.
“Keep going,” I yelled.
The wind picked up and everything in the room whirled around. It was like we were in that hurricane spell again. Jean-Claude got his feet. He tried to resist the spell, but it was futile. He walked toward the door.
“Keep chanting,” I said.
Over and over we recited the words as Jean-Claude walked by us and to the bedroom door. He never looked our way. We ran behind him, down the staircase and to the foyer. The front door flew open. My mother and Annabelle stood in front of the door. Their eyes widened and they rushed out of the way as Jean-Claude walked right out of the manor. Down the driveway he went. We stood on the porch watching as he turned and went right down the road.
I blew the hair out of my eyes. “Thank goodness that’s over.”
“What in the world happened?” my mother asked.
Nikki popped up next to me. Her wings fluttered as if she’d just flown in. “She was fighting off the man who was trying to get the book. Plus, she gave that Louise a smackdown. Louise wanted to take Halloween to the Netherworld so that she could reanimate all her friends.”
“I need to speak with you, mother. It’s about Nikki,” I said.
My mom smiled sheepishly. “Well, I just figured you could use the help. You know, after being dumped at the altar. I could see that things weren’t going right. Stress can mess with your magic.”
“And you didn’t want me to mess up my spells,” I said.
“She tried to get me to find Nicolas,” Nikki said.
“Thanks for tattling,” my mother said with a frown.
Headlights captured our attention. A car drove slowly toward us.
“Who is that?” my mother asked.
Liam and Thomas stepped in front of me as if shielding me from whoever had arrived. I recognized the Jeep. I’d momentarily forgotten about Paul after everything else that had occurred. Paul got out from the driver’s side. He wasn’t alone. Monica climbed out from the passenger seat.
“What do you want?” Thomas asked.
Paul held his hands up. “I’m not the bad guy.”
Since he’d been able to come on the property, I assumed that was true.
“I found Monica walking down the side of the road. Then Louise and her boyfriend pulled up. They tried to get Monica to go with them. I knew by the look on her face that she didn’t want to go. She said she needed to speak with you.”
“You left me and I was afraid,” Monica said.
“Since you brought the ghost here and tricked me into reanimating him I guess you can understand why I would leave you,” I said.
“I honestly had no idea. I just wanted to come by and apologize. I hope you accept my apology,” she said.
“Apology accepted,” I said.
I wasn’t sure I believed her yet or wanted to take her apology, but I supposed things had worked out so I wouldn’t hold a grudge.
“Is everything okay?” Paul asked.
I raised an eyebrow. “You’re not involved in this? Why were you at the neighbor’s house?”
“I just went over there to talk with Louise. Things seemed odd with that woman. I came to see you at the manor first. Obviously, I didn’t find you. Then I went to the neighbor’s to speak with Louise. She said that was where she was staying.”
“Aw, he was just trying to help,” Nikki said, bouncing over to stand by Paul. “Look at his face. He’s so sweet.”
I’d be the judge of that. For now, it seemed as if things were settled. How long would that last before LaVeau Manor, Enchantment Pointe, and my life were thrown into utter chaos again?
